Vengeance.

Even the moonlight refused to touch her, as she paced quietly within the dark,

Her heart was trying to ignite a fire, but her mind couldn’t create a spark.

Then her half awake trance shook her, as she collapsed under the barrage of lies,

The picture of her husband kissing another woman, moved tauntingly in front of her eyes.

With rage infused in every breath she walked, fuelled by thoughts that drove her insane,

She looked around for anything that would help her tonight, in endlessly prolonging the pain.

At last she found what she was looking for, as she opened the diminutive box of wood,

The chopping knife gleamed with menacing intent, even in the pitch dark where she stood.

Her steps betrayed not a sound to the silence, as she climbed to the bedroom door,

She quietly pushed the door and it opened, she felt like a predator anticipating gore.

She looked at him turn happily in slumber, as she softly tied his hands to the bed,

She looked at the sharp knife in her hand, wishing it was a butcher’s knife instead.

She hissed “WAKE UP!” with a tone so cold, he woke up with a start, fearing the worst,

He noticed his hands were tied to the bed, then he saw the knife and his heart nearly burst.

She took the pictures and showed him one by one, as his eyes shamefully admitted defeat,

She savoured the sweat rolling down his head, and his chest heaving frantically to breathe.

And before the first scream could escape his lips, she stuffed a cloth right down his mouth,

No one was going to change her mind tonight, no plea for mercy would create a doubt.

Her fingers clasped around the chopping knife, it’s edge barely revealing her hand’s quiver.

She pressed it down, and wrote “Cheat” on his head, as blood flowed down his face like a river.

She saw his eyes widen and scream with regret, as her tears fell down on her merciless hand,

But the pain of being disgustingly cheated upon, made her cruel actions easier to understand.

She etched every letter with a spiteful vengeance, his muffled cries left her distantly unfazed,

Tonight she would brand him for everyone to see, with a mark which would never be erased.

She got up with her thirst for revenge now quenched, then she smiled as he lay and groaned,

She loomed like a hunter playing with her prey, as she walked aside and picked up her phone.

“Hello 911? I’m reporting an emergency here, could you please try and make it here fast?

She gave them the address and calmly hung up, as her husband kept staring, aghast.

She turned to him and spoke in a cold whisper “Isn’t it amazing what stupidity makes you give?

You betrayed and played behind my back, and you thought I’d have the heart to forgive?

The police will come and put me behind bars, but I think I’ve achieved what I wanted to do,

I’ve given every woman in this world a precaution, from spending a lifetime of lies with you.”

A clutter of footsteps echoed from downstairs, as the door slammed open with a bang,

The room was bustling with people now, and then shouts of horror and disgust rang…

The clang of metal handcuffs locked into place, as she walked with them without a fight,

She looked at the traitor one last time, and her eerie laugh reverberated into the night.

Silence.

Deathly silence broken by hurried footsteps, and the pained moaning of an iron gate,
The young man ushered in faster than the wind, smiled, then said “Sorry, I’m late.”
The cold night did nothing to deter the warmth in his smile, as he stood there all alone,
He turned and pulled out a white sheet from his bag, and spread it across the stone.

He removed a gray candle and carefully kept it, on the stone and under skies equally gray,
When it refused to burn he chuckled to himself, “Well no more light in my life anyway.”
He pulled out a bouquet of blood red roses, and lay them out across the flawless white sheet,
“Why the stone face? he laughed and said, “I’ve been looking forward to this all week!”

For the next 2 hours he spoke to the stone, mesmerized, laughing and talking as if under a spell,
But after a point his voice started to quiver, then complete silence as his eyes started to swell.
He waited for the silence to sink into his soul, as his eyes tried to blink out the tears,
He stared at her tombstone in front of his eyes, wishing he could erase the numbers in her death year.

He remembered when this silence was non-existent, when the sound of her laughter lit up the room,
Unlike the candle on her grave did now, he loved how her gray eyes danced to dispel the gloom.
But now she lay buried in the silence of the graveyard, and nothing could drown out the gray,
Nothing could save him from the sorrows now, and no one could take them away.

“I wish you weren’t so cold sometimes” he said, as the shivers finally kissed his spine,
He got up slowly and then quietly kissed her grave, “I’ll be back for you in a week’s time.”
The footsteps faded into the distance, as the iron gate moaned to a still,
Her grave once again receded into peace, and  her soul into not so eternal bliss.

Demons.

Her mind at the peak of her innocence, as pure as it had ever been,
Living and loving all that crossed her path, she was a gentle soul of just fifteen.
She had the right to make her own mistakes, so she could be strong enough to decide,
When she was ready to stay up on her feet, without being swayed by the world’s dark side.

But as she embraced life in a world of her own, she was convinced the world couldn’t be bad,
So she choose to wander outside her little bubble, even farther then she ever had.
One night she trusted herself a little too much, as she ventured too far into the dark,
Unaware that even at an age so brittle, the world she didn’t know had her marked.

A shadow which blended so perfectly into the night, grabbed her before she could even realize,
A hand on her mouth muffled her shouts, and no one could hear the screams in her eyes.
Her struggles proved to be embarrassingly weak, as she flailed wildly out of shock,
Then suddenly she felt a fist crush her face, like someone smashed her head with a rock.

Fear, shock and the taste of blood, ruptured the very foundations of her trust from within,
She prayed and begged for a little mercy, as she felt her clothes ripped away from her skin.
Shoved to the ground with such reckless force, she couldn’t get up even when she tried,
And then her screams tore the night’s silence, as something threatened to rip her insides.

As she felt the shadow finally drift away, she screamed until her throat almost erupted,
Her blood boiling with rage and betrayal, as all her 15 years of faith lay disrupted.
Her mind, white like her skin drained of blood, bereft of thoughts and intentions that mattered,
As she suffered pain beyond her worst nightmares, and her soul lay ashamed and tattered.

All that she had learnt throughout her life, in one night now failed to make sense,
As she lay in the cold, naked and sore, not a single person rushed to her defense.
As the night went on she lay unable to move, until she felt people lifting her off the floor,
“It’s okay, you’re going to be fine now.” insensitive to what had just shook her to her core.

Months after that night scarred her memories, yet the demons roamed around in her head,
Dark circles reminiscent of the dark night she faced, traces of her lovely smile all but dead.
Never again would she trust anyone anymore, never a sound night’s sleep on her bed,
Empty spaces left her with terror in her heart, darkness an inexplicable feeling of dread.

She sits repulsed at going into that world again, afraid of strangers and their revolting leers,
Caught in a place where loneliness is what she wants, but being left alone is what she fears.
She wonders if she’ll ever find herself again, if she’ll ever rediscover that lost feeling,
Tired of trying to move beyond the closed doors, trying to rise beyond an invisible ceiling.

She wonders if she’ll ever feel like herself again, if she’ll ever be able to leave everything behind,
She wonders if she’ll get her memories to stop raping every single thought in her mind.
Darkness in her days and darkness in her nights, she waits for something to make her whole,
For something to erase those million scars, permanently etched and engraved into her soul.

Being God.

The winter’s scream now raged with fury, as the sun lost its powerful glow,
the city was wrapped in a blanket of white, fearfully quiet in the realm of snow.
The embers in the fireplace stayed barely alive, trying to fight their natural foe,
The vice grip of ice grew even stronger, as the fire’s intensity dropped ever so low.

I looked outside for signs of defiance, anything that stood up to the elements in play,
the wind and the cold forged a powerful unison, proving unbeatable on that brutal day.
But as my eyes scanned the falling snow, I saw a barely visible speck in the distance,
whoever it was surely had nerves of steel, to even contemplate initiating a resistance.

The practicality of staying inside was gone, the scales tipped in curiosity’s favour,
How could I this miss a chance to learn, from someone on a mighty endeavour?
I slipped on my coat over 2 layers of clothes, and set my foot outside the main door,
Eagerly I shuffled through the heavy snow, imagining what explanations lay in store.

I walked into the cold and deserted street, as the speck I saw earlier grew bigger,
I kept on walking as my footsteps slowed, until I was directly above the cloaked figure.
The frail hooded person lay tortured by ice, a thick woolen blanket lay on his lap,
Confused at why he hadn’t used the blanket, I bent down and gave him a tap.

“Please use that blanket to cover yourself sir, this snowstorm is far from done.”
A hand reached up and the hood came down, and I saw that it was a woman.
Shocked by the revelation I kept on looking, as she looked back and shook her head,
“What are you doing in this cold my child? You should be at home snuggled in bed.”

It was amazing how the frost harassed her, and yet her voice remained ever so calm,
But what perplexed me was the unused blanket, one that could save her much harm.”
Pointing my finger at her lap I spoke “that could do you a world of good you know?
All you have to do is wrap it around you once, and it’ll keep out the horrible snow.”

She turned her head slowly and looked at me, smiling with a face all cold and sore,
“I certainly could do with warmth my son, but there is someone who needs it more.
I raised my eyebrows in obvious confusion, I guess she caught the look on my face,
She smiled again and beckoned me close, pointing between the blanket’s empty space.

I moved a step forward and slowly bent down, between the blanket I took a peep,
And within the covers lay 4 new born puppies, embraced by the arms of blissful sleep.
“ I could use the blanket and not give a damn, but my conscience will hurt me like knives,
I’d rather sit down and die with the cold, then let the world take these beautiful lives.

I’ve seen fate deprive the ones who are weak, so I’ve chosen to take up my stance,
The world can refuse to lend me a hand, but I’ll do whatever to give them a chance.
After all we mortals are forced to accept, that we worship destiny as the ultimate Lord,
I believe we are the masters of our own fates, although sometimes we need help from God.

So I became God for these helpless beings, and even though I‘m aware that I can’t do much,
I promise one thing to you and God above, as long as I’m alive they’ll be untouched.”
I stood in the snow bereft of any words, how could one perfectly acknowledge a noble thought?
Why was it that all the selfish souls were loafing, while selfless ones like her were left to rot?

“You are amazing!” I somehow managed to utter, and again I was left searching for speech,
Knowing that it was no less than extraordinary, avoiding that blanket just within her reach.
I stood up again and turned back around, the city now resembled a scene from the north pole,
I prayed for the lady as I walked back home, hoping she’d survive with the warmth in her soul.
